Regulation
Wine labelling: what European regulation requires
Since 8 December 2024, every wine produced and bottled for the European market must make its energy value and ingredient list accessible. Regulation (EU) 2021/2117 ends the exception wine enjoyed in food labelling.
What the text says
Two mandatory pieces of information
Every wine placed on the European market must state its energy value, in kilojoules and kilocalories, together with the list of its ingredients.
This information may appear directly on the label or be made accessible electronically — usually a QR code. In that case, the page reached must contain no commercial content and no consumer tracking.
Who is concerned
The whole trade, whatever the format
- All producersIndependent winemakers, cooperatives and merchants selling on the European market.
- All types of wineStill, sparkling, naturally sweet and aromatised wines are all covered.
- From bottling onwardsAny wine produced and bottled since 8 December 2024 must comply.
- Including intra-EU exportThe obligation follows the destination market, not the country of production.
Why this text
Wine joins ordinary food law
The European Union has been harmonising food labelling for years. Wine was largely exempt; it no longer is.
For the trade, the stakes go beyond compliance: a consumer scanning a bottle is looking for information, and how it is presented reflects on the estate.
Comply without data entry
GrapeTrack produces the page and QR code from your laboratory’s analysis report. Energy value is calculated, not copied.
